In addition to antibody secretion, B cells have recently been recognized to function as antigen-presenting/immune-modulatory cells. Indeed, previous studies with mice genetically deficient for B cells [B cell knock-out (KO) mice] showed the requirement of B cells for development of autoimmune thyroiditis, type 1 diabetes and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) [3–5].
