In fact this type of pathology had been called ‘pseudohypertrophic muscular dystrophy’ for several decades prior to the suggestion of John Walton and Frederick Nattrass in 1954 to use the term ‘Duchenne dystrophy’ which has now become the prevailing fashion (2). It is generally assumed that the proliferation of connective tissue is a secondary phenomenon, and many physicians regard it simply as a compensatory replacement of lost muscle.
