Highly stretchable, sensitive, and reusable ion-detection photonic papers (IDPPs) for evaluating the quality of visual and portable comestible liquids (e.g., soy sauce) are presented through the application of a double-network structure in this current study. Poly-methacryloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, polyacrylamide, and highly ordered polystyrene microspheres are incorporated to create the structure. The double-network configuration significantly impacts the mechanical properties of IDPPs, leading to an increase in elongation at break from a baseline of 110% to a remarkable 1600%. In parallel, the optical properties inherent to the photonic crystals are maintained. Through ion exchange, IDPPs expedite ion response by regulating the swelling behavior of counter ions' hydration radii. Ion exchange with a small hydration radius, facilitated by an IDPP, results in the rapid detection (3-30 seconds) of chloride ions within a concentration range of 0.001 to 0.010 molar; this exchange mechanism is visibly apparent. Reusability of IDPPs is substantially improved, by more than 30 times, thanks to the enhancement of mechanical properties and the reversible exchange of ions. From 2000 to 2020, the tertiary healthcare system's internal captive insurance database was examined to pinpoint all otolaryngology-related malpractice claims, irrespective of whether they were ultimately settled or dismissed. A comprehensive record was created to capture the date of the incident, the date of the claim, the type of error, the final health outcome of the patient, the subspecialty of the provider involved, the overall expenses, the case's resolution, and the final compensation amount.
Twenty-eight claims were identified during the review. The year 2000 to 2010 period witnessed a total of 11 claims, marking a substantial 393% increase compared to the previous period. A substantial increase in claims occurred between 2011 and 2020, reaching 17, representing a notable 607% increase from the prior period. Head and neck surgery, with a count of 9 (321% of all cases), was the most frequently involved subspecialty, followed closely by general otolaryngology (7 cases, 250%), pediatrics (5 cases, 179%), skull base/rhinology (4 cases, 143%), and finally, laryngology (1 case, 36%). A significant number of surgical procedures, 357% (n=10), were found to be performed improperly, a figure exceeding the incidence of failure to diagnose (n=8, 286%), treat (n=4, 143%), or obtain informed consent (n=3, 107%). Although two cases remain unresolved, seventeen out of twenty-six (65.4%) cases were settled, and twenty out of twenty-six (76.9%) had some or all parties dismissed. The expense burden (p = .022) and time from incident to final disposition (p = .013) were considerably greater for claims that were dismissed in comparison to those that were settled.
