We demonstrate (a) the presence of Schottky

We demonstrate (a) the presence of Schottky

barriers of 0.34 eV at the metal/semiconductor interface and (b) a large asymmetry in the electronic densities of states and flattening of electronic bands along the cross-plane directions near the Fermi energy of these superlattices, desirable for high Seebeck coefficient. The vibrational spectra of these superlattices show SP600125 in vivo softening of transverse acoustic phonon modes along the growth direction and localization of ScN phonons in the vibrational energy gap between metal and semiconductor layers. Boltzmann transport theory-based analysis suggests a reduction of lattice thermal conductivity by an order of magnitude compared to its individual bulk components, which makes these materials suitable for thermoelectric applications. “We describe an optic capture technique that can be used during combined cataract and vitreoretinal surgery if in-the-bag implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) is not possible The IOL is placed in the ciliary sulcus, and optic capture is performed behind an intact anterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis, with the haptics remaining in the sulcus

The technique maintains IOL stability and separation of the anterior and posterior segments intraoperatively and postoperatively

“Permittivity in a metamaterial, which depends on the electric field of a propagating electromagnetic wave, PXD101 induces anomalous responses against electromagnetic waves. When we consider discharge plasma an example of a metamaterial with field-dependent permittivity and negative permeability, a transition takes place between positive and negative permittivity, leading to reflection of waves in a low-field branch and transmission by the creation of a negative-refractive- index medium in

a high-field branch. Nonlinearity in the phase space of the permittivity and the electric field in this system trigger this dynamic transition, which is suggested in the numerical results and clarified in an analytical model. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3574921]“
“Identifying the group of subjects prone to disparities in access to kidney transplantation is important for developing potential interventions. Data from the United States Renal Data System (January 1, 1990-September 1, 2007; n = 3407) were used to study association between the Social Adaptability Index (SAI; based upon employment, marital status, education, income, and substance abuse) and outcomes (time to being placed on the waiting list and time to being transplanted once listed). Patients were 56.9 +/- 16.1 yr old, 54.2% men, 64.2% white, and 50.4% had diabetes.
